🧬 Overview

The Rasta Zoanthus is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable Zoanthid varieties in the reef-keeping hobby, celebrated for its extraordinary combination of red, yellow and green coloration.

Each polyp displays a beautiful multicoloured pattern, with concentric rings of warm yellow and fiery red surrounded by a vibrant fluorescent green skirt. The distinctive colour combination gives this coral its famous Rasta name.

🍽️ Care & Feeding

Rasta Zoanthids are primarily photosynthetic, obtaining much of their energy through their symbiotic algae.

Direct feeding is generally unnecessary, although occasional broadcast feeding with fine particulate coral foods, rotifers or appropriately sized zooplankton may provide additional nutrition.

Maintain stable water parameters and moderate nutrient availability to support healthy growth, coloration and polyp extension.

Provide gentle to moderate indirect water movement to prevent detritus from accumulating between the polyps.

Handling precaution: Zoanthids may contain palytoxin. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling or fragging, and never boil, heat or scrub rocks containing these corals.

Place Rasta Zoanthids in the lower to middle areas of the reef, where they receive low to moderate lighting and gentle to moderate indirect water movement.

Start newly introduced frags in a relatively low-light position and gradually acclimate them to stronger illumination if necessary.

Avoid excessive direct flow, which may prevent the polyps from opening fully.

For a spectacular display, combine Rasta Zoanthids with contrasting varieties such as King Midas, Eagle Eye or other colourful morphs to create a vibrant Zoanthid garden.

An isolated rock or dedicated frag island is also an excellent option for controlling their spread and allowing the colony to develop naturally.
