Overview
The Golden Veil Derasa Clam (Tridacna derasa) is a majestic, fast-growing giant clam known for its broad mantle, fluid movement, and soft golden or blue-striped patterns. Cultured for reef aquaria, this species adds elegance and a sense of permanence to your display — a living sculpture for the reef floor.
Calm and non-aggressive, it thrives under intense lighting and stable parameters, making it ideal for mature reef systems looking for a centerpiece that grows with time.
Care & Feeding
As a photosynthetic bivalve, T. derasa relies on intense lighting to feed its symbiotic zooxanthellae. It may also absorb nutrients like nitrates and ammonia from the water column. In high-nutrient tanks or during early growth stages, it may benefit from occasional phytoplankton dosing.
Place securely on flat substrate — often directly on the sandbed — ensuring the clam’s byssal opening is free of debris and that it cannot topple.
Optimal Parameters
-
Alkalinity (dKH): 8–11
-
Calcium (Ca): 420–460 ppm
-
Magnesium (Mg): 1280–1350 ppm
-
Nitrate (NO₃): 2–10 ppm
-
Phosphate (PO₄): 0.02–0.08 ppm
Placement
Place on sandbed or flat rock structure in the lower to middle zone of the tank, directly under strong lighting (T5, metal halide, or high-output LEDs). Ensure moderate but indirect flow — just enough to keep the mantle gently moving.
