🧬 Overview

The Purple Green Fuzzy Rhodactis is a captivating mushroom coral, combining beautiful violet-purple pigmentation with vibrant green highlights and an exceptionally attractive textured appearance.

Its characteristic fleshy oral disc is covered with numerous short, branching projections, creating the distinctive fuzzy appearance that makes Rhodactis mushrooms so popular among reef enthusiasts.

The combination of deep purple tones and luminous green pigmentation produces a beautiful contrast, with the green areas adding brightness and definition to the coral's intricate surface.

Under blue-spectrum reef lighting, the green pigmentation may exhibit particularly attractive fluorescence, while the surrounding purple coloration provides depth and visual balance.

Unlike smooth-surfaced Discosoma mushrooms, Rhodactis are appreciated for their complex surface texture, fleshy structure and distinctive tentacle-like projections, which create a rich, almost velvety appearance.

As the mushroom expands, its textured surface becomes increasingly prominent, revealing the intricate distribution of colours and delicate projections across the oral disc.

Rhodactis are also valued for their adaptability and relatively undemanding care requirements, making them an excellent choice for established mixed reef aquariums and dedicated mushroom gardens.

This WYSIWYG specimen has been individually selected for its attractive purple and green coloration, distinctive fuzzy texture and beautiful visual character.

🍽️ Care & Feeding

Rhodactis mushrooms are photosynthetic corallimorpharians that obtain much of their energy through their symbiotic dinoflagellates. However, they may also capture suspended food particles and benefit from occasional supplemental feeding with small meaty foods, finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched Artemia and appropriately sized coral preparations.

Supplemental feeding is not essential, but occasional feeding may support growth and tissue development.

Provide gentle to moderate, indirect water movement that allows the mushroom to expand naturally without being continuously folded or displaced by the current.

Avoid strong, concentrated flow, which may prevent full expansion or cause the mushroom to detach from its substrate.

Stable water chemistry and measurable nutrient concentrations are important for maintaining healthy tissue, consistent coloration and natural growth.

Rhodactis generally prefer low to moderate lighting, although individual specimens may adapt to different intensities when acclimated gradually.

Excessive lighting can cause tissue contraction, bleaching or reduced expansion, particularly when introducing a specimen into a new aquarium.

Under favourable conditions, Rhodactis may reproduce through natural division or pedal laceration, gradually developing additional individuals around the original mushroom.

📈 Optimal Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Alkalinity (dKH) 7.5–8.5
Calcium (Ca) 420–450 ppm
Magnesium (Mg) 1300–1400 ppm
Nitrate (NO₃) 5–15 ppm
Phosphate (PO₄) 0.03–0.10 ppm

📍 Placement

Position the mushroom in the lower to middle sections of the reef, preferably on a stable rock surface receiving low to moderate lighting and gentle, indirect water movement.

Rhodactis are particularly suitable for placement in dedicated mushroom gardens, isolated rock structures or sheltered areas where their fleshy discs can expand freely.

Allow sufficient space between the mushroom and neighbouring corals, as Rhodactis may irritate sensitive species through direct contact and can gradually occupy surrounding surfaces as they grow.

Avoid placing the specimen in areas exposed to strong pump currents or excessive lighting.

Under suitable conditions, the mushroom can develop excellent expansion, revealing its characteristic fuzzy purple surface and vibrant green pigmentation in an attractive, textured display.
