Overview

The Red or Orange Finger Gorgonian (Diodogorgia nodulifera) is a stunning non-photosynthetic soft coral known for its bright whip-like branches and feathery white or yellow polyps. Native to the deeper reef slopes and cave openings of the Caribbean, this gorgonian is both elegant and dynamic, bringing movement and colour to shaded parts of the reef aquarium.

It is ideal for experienced reefers interested in cultivating a naturalistic, flow-driven reef system that supports filter-feeding invertebrates.

Care & Feeding

As a non-photosynthetic species, Diodogorgia relies entirely on feeding. It must be supplied with:

  • Marine snow

  • Rotifers

  • Phytoplankton

  • Microparticles of reef blends (e.g., reef roids, reef nutrition products)

Feed at least once daily. Adequate strong laminar flow is essential to keep detritus from accumulating on the tissue and to help deliver suspended food directly to the polyps.

🧠 This species is sensitive to poor water quality and handling. Avoid air exposure and do not allow algae or cyanobacteria to overgrow the tissue.

Optimal Parameters

  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12

  • Calcium (Ca): 420–460 ppm

  • Magnesium (Mg): 1300–1400 ppm

  • Nitrate (NO3): 2–10 ppm

  • Phosphate (PO4): 0.01–0.05 ppm

Placement

Mount vertically or horizontally in shaded or low-light areas of the tank. Best placed under overhangs or along the side of live rock where direct light is reduced but flow remains consistent. Allow the polyps to fully extend by avoiding aggressive neighbours and ensuring open space.

🧬 A specialist coral for the experienced aquarist – the Finger Gorgonian is an exceptional NPS coral offering flowing movement, vivid colour, and a glimpse into deeper reef environments. Perfect for biodiversity-focused or natural reef displays.
