🧬 Overview

The Petrol Galaxy Speckle Blastomussa wellsi is a captivating LPS selection, combining unusual petrol-blue pigmentation with a beautiful galaxy-like speckled pattern.

Its large, fleshy polyps display a sophisticated mixture of deep petrol blue, teal and smoky blue-green tones, enhanced by scattered lighter speckles that resemble tiny stars against a darker background.

The combination of rich pigmentation and delicate spotting creates an intricate, almost cosmic appearance, making this Blastomussa particularly attractive for aquarists seeking unusual colours and patterns.

Under blue-spectrum reef lighting, the contrast between the darker petrol tones and the lighter speckled areas may become especially pronounced, highlighting the coral's natural pigmentation and textured surface.

Blastomussa wellsi is also appreciated for its large, rounded, fleshy polyps, which expand beautifully under suitable conditions and can gradually develop into impressive multi-polyp colonies.

Unlike more demanding SPS corals, Blastomussa generally adapts well to stable reef aquariums with moderate lighting and gentle water movement.

This premium selection offers an excellent opportunity to introduce a distinctive petrol-blue, galaxy-speckled LPS coral into a carefully curated reef collection.

🍽️ Care & Feeding

Blastomussa wellsi is a photosynthetic LPS coral that obtains much of its energy through its symbiotic dinoflagellates. However, it can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding with small meaty foods, finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched Artemia and appropriately sized coral foods.

Target feeding once or twice per week may support tissue development and growth, although it is not essential when the coral receives sufficient light and nutrients.

Provide gentle, indirect water movement that allows the fleshy polyps to expand naturally without being continuously compressed or irritated.

Avoid strong, direct flow, which may prevent full expansion and potentially damage the delicate tissue.

Stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium concentrations are important for skeletal growth, while measurable nitrate and phosphate levels help maintain healthy tissue and coloration.

Blastomussa generally performs best under low to moderate lighting, and excessive PAR may cause tissue contraction or bleaching.

📈 Optimal Parameters

Parameter

Ideal Range

Alkalinity (dKH)

7.5–8.5

Calcium (Ca)

420–450 ppm

Magnesium (Mg)

1300–1400 ppm

Nitrate (NO₃)

5–15 ppm

Phosphate (PO₄)

0.03–0.10 ppm

📍 Placement

Position the frag in the lower to middle sections of the reef, preferably in an area receiving gentle, indirect water movement and low to moderate lighting.

Blastomussa wellsi is particularly suitable for placement on lower rock structures or stable frag platforms, where its fleshy polyps can expand without rubbing against surrounding surfaces.

Allow sufficient space between the coral and neighbouring colonies to prevent irritation or competition.

Under suitable conditions, the polyps can become beautifully inflated, enhancing the depth and contrast of the petrol-blue pigmentation and speckled pattern.
